Join a diverse group of leaders in a week-long leadership challenge, delivered in a hybrid format
Design action projects in one of our four challenge areas, contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Align your personal values and professional aspirations to fulfill your leadership potential
The Global Leadership Challenge is a joint initiative of the St. Gallen Symposium and the University of Oxford. Together, we aim to connect young leaders across boundaries to address sustainable development goals and enable them to become responsible leaders in their local contexts.
GLC 2022 focused on “A New Generational Contract” as its core theme. The idea of a generational contract captures the principle that different generations depend on each other to provide mutual support across different stages of their lives. It can be most simply described as “what generations owe each other” – in areas such as education, environmental protection, and health – and reminds us we have a responsibility to be good descendants and ancestors, and to consider the impacts of our actions on all generations. Learn more about our four challenges and the application process on the challenge website.
During GLC week, participants will engage with leading academics, industry experts, and practitioners in a series of dialogues, masterclasses, and workshops. To put the learnings into practice, they will collaborate in small groups to develop impact projects that address at least one of the four challenge areas, directly contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Evaluated by our Award Jury, the group with the most outstanding project idea will be able to attend the 53rd St. Gallen Symposium as Leaders of Tomorrow.
After GLC, participants can apply for further mentoring to reflect on their own purpose and grow as future leaders. All active participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement from the University of Oxford and the St. Gallen Symposium.
Between 8th-12th December, the Third Annual Global Leadership Challenge (GLC) convened 100 young leaders from over 50 countries in a hybrid conference advancing responsible leadership that makes a difference in the world. The core theme of GLC 2022 was “A New Generational Contract” and the participants were tasked with creating impact projects focused on one of the four Sustainable Development Goals. To learn from experienced experts in these fields, they engaged in cross-generational dialogues with around 20 Senior Advisors, including Luis Guillermo Solís, the former President of Costa Rica, Justine Sass, Chief of UNESCO’s Section of Education for Inclusion and Gender Equality, and Arunma Oteh, former Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank.
A diverse team comprised of students and young professionals from three countries was selected as the winner of GLC 2022 for their project Tech-to-Teach – an end-to-end offline education model that seeks to recycle used laptops into learning centers for rural villages, simultaneously reducing global e-waste. They made a compelling case to “source the laptops from the big industries who have policies of replacing laptops when the specs fall below a certain standard, outfit them with offline education software, and change the model from learning content to experiential learning through gamification”.

All active participants will receive an official Certificate of Achievement from the University of Oxford and the St. Gallen Symposium.
The winning team will be offered to join the 53rd St. Gallen Symposium on 2-3 May 2024 as Leaders of Tomorrow and engage in cross-generational dialogue with senior leaders.
As Leaders of Tomorrow, their expenses for travel and accommodation will be fully covered. After the conference, they will join a global network of emerging thinkers and changemakers.
After GLC, participants can apply for further mentoring to learn skills and competencies towards building their own ventures, and “leadership development” (with the Oxford Character Project at the University of Oxford) to reflect on their own purpose and grow as a future leader.
