Alena Buyx

Speaker at the St. Gallen Symposium

Prof. Dr. Alena Buyx is Professor of Medical Ethics in Munich and a fully licensed physician with additional degrees in philosophy and sociology. Her work spans clinical ethics, biotechnological innovation, medical research, and questions of justice in modern healthcare systems, following an interdisciplinary “embedded ethics” approach. From 2016 to 2024, she served as a member of the Deutscher Ethikrat, chairing the Council from 2020 to 2024. She was also a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Committee on Developing Global Standards for Governance and Oversight of Human Genome Editing. Previously, she held academic positions at the University of Kiel, the University of Münster, Harvard University, and University College London. Prof. Buyx completed her habilitation in 2013.
