Khaled El-Enany

Speaker at the St. Gallen Symposium

Khaled El-Enany has served as Director-General of UNESCO since 2025. In this role, he leads the United Nations agency responsible for international cooperation in education, science and culture. An Egyptologist and professor at Helwan University in Cairo for more than three decades, he has held several academic leadership roles including Vice Dean of the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management and Head of the Tour Guide Department. Prior to his current position, he served as Egypt’s Minister of Antiquities and subsequently as Minister of Tourism and Antiquities from 2016 to 2022. Earlier, he was Director General of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization and the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. He is also active internationally, including as Special Ambassador for Cultural Tourism of the World Tourism Organization and patron of the African World Heritage Fund. El-Enany holds a PhD in Egyptology from Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Tourism Guidance from Helwan University.
