Derek Walker

Derek Walker is the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, a position he has held since March 2023. In this role, he is committed to safeguarding the needs of future generations, providing guidance to public bodies and policymakers in Wales on incorporating long-term thinking into decisions that impact social, economic, environmental, and cultural wellbeing. Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Derek served for over a decade as Chief Executive of Cwmpas, the UK’s largest development agency for social enterprises and cooperatives, where he led initiatives to strengthen communities, create jobs, and promote inclusive, community-focused economic growth. From 2004 to 2009, he was Head of Policy and Campaigns at the Wales Trade Union Congress (TUC), where he developed impactful campaigns and organized high-profile events to advance the objectives of the Wales TUC. Derek holds a master’s degree in international journalism from Cardiff University and a bachelor’s degree in modern european studies from University College London.
