Abdul Aziz Muhamat

Speaker at the St. Gallen Symposium

Abdul Aziz Muhamat is a human rights advocate for migrants and refugees. He was the 2019 Martin Ennals Award Laureate for Human Rights Defenders and a UN fellow at OHCHR. Abdul Aziz also participated in the Human Rights Defenders Advocacy Programme (HRDAP) with the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) and the Global Detention Project as a Research and Advocacy Fellow in 2021. He is a social worker and co-author of a book called "They Cannot Take the Sky," which he wrote in collaboration with other refugees on offshore and onshore detention. Abdul Aziz also created a podcast called "The Messenger," which won several awards, including the Grand Award at the 2017 New York Festivals International Radio Awards, the 2017 UNAA Media Award for Best Radio Documentary, the Australian Human Rights Commission Media Award, and the 2017 Walkley Award for Radio/Audio Feature.
