Human Freedom and Choice in the Light of Technological Change

Our annual flagship study, the Voices of the Leaders of Tomorrow Report 2020 – a collaboration of the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM) and the St. Gallen Symposium – has been released. Read and download the press release as well as the full report below.

This year’s version of the annual flagship study explores how the next generation of leaders in politics, business, science and civil society view human freedom and choice in light of inter-generational inequities and emerging technologies. The report explores what freedom means to young top talents (n=898), particularly in light of rapid technological change – giving voice to the St. Gallen Symposium’s Leaders of Tomorrow (LoT) community.

Five key insights:
  • Debates on freedom should bear in mind inter-generational fairness: 84% of the LoTs blame the older generation for having granted itself too much freedom at the expense of the younger generation.
  • Leaders of Tomorrow demand regulation of the digital sphere: 75% of the LoT recommend restricting the freedom to express oneself freely on the Internet if others are severely insulted or verbally abused.
  • Leaders of Tomorrow push back against technology that limits users’ freedom of choice: 67% of the Leaders of Tomorrow explicitly evaluate algorithms that filter the online content they see as a restriction of their freedom of information.
  • Leaders of Tomorrow’s willingness to delegate certain decision tasks to AI varies strongly according to the nature of the job: It’s lowest for the delegation of selecting job candidates (53%) and highest for granting customers discounts or setting surcharges (89%).
  • Transparency and ethical principles built into technologies may drive future business models: 92% of the Leaders of Tomorrow favour technology futures that guarantee transparency and data privacy; but just 44% consider it likely that this will happen.
