Welcome to the 54th St. Gallen Symposium! This year’s Opening Ceremony sets the stage for a vital cross-generational dialogue on "Shifting Global Power." A new multipolar order is emerging, challenging long-standing assumptions and reshaping how nations, businesses, and individuals engage with one another. As power structures evolve, how should we navigate this moment of profound change? What responsibilities do today’s and tomorrow’s leaders bear in ensuring stability, prosperity, and progress? As we embark on this discussion, we extend our gratitude to all who have gathered to engage in open, honest, and constructive dialogue. Over the next two days, we look forward to deliberating on key topics, fostering mutual understanding, and uncovering opportunities to inspire meaningful change.
In recent years, Europe's future has been clouded by economic stagnation, geopolitical instability, and societal division. In this spirited Oxford-style debate, two teams clash over Europe's prospects, discussing economic, geopolitical, and social dimensions. Is Europe truly doomed, or are brighter days ahead? Our audience will engage with provocative arguments, reconsider their assumptions, and explore whether the continent's outlook warrants hope or skepticism.
Disruption, rising uncertainty, and the pull of outdated habits are challenging businesses’ ability to adapt and innovate. Amid geopolitical shifts, economic turbulence, and rapid technological change, many organizations face internal resistance and legacy mindsets that hinder transformation. As global competition intensifies, how can leaders foster a culture that embraces innovation and equips teams to navigate change? What practical strategies can drive adaptability, encourage new behaviors, and build long-term resilience? This session explores how businesses can overcome rigidity and future-proof themselves for a world in transition.
100 days into Donald Trump’s presidency, key questions arise: What geopolitical, economic, and security policies has the new administration already set in motion, and what scenarios could unfold for Europe and the world? How can strategic scenario planning serve as a vital steering tool for organizations to identify opportunities - but, more importantly, anticipate and mitigate risks at an early stage?
The numbers tell the story: women have outperformed men in formal educational settings quite a while ago. In 2021, women earned 59% of all bachelor’s degrees, 63% of all master’s degrees and 57% of all doctorates in the United States. But soon after their graduation, women lose their advantage. In the first career step, for every 100 men only 81 women are promoted. Up the corporate ladder women lose even more representation, going down to 29% at the senior VP and C-Suite level. The same pattern can be found in Europe. In the Roundtable session we will explore why these gender gaps in the workplace exist and discuss, next to the systemic issues and biases, also what actions and strategies women can pursue themselves. Furthermore, we will share our experiences on how to find a balanced DEI (Diversity Equity Inclusion) approach, given the current political climate, to foster its genuine purpose of achieving gender parity in the workplace.

As power shifts across the globe, a resilient international system must be able to absorb geopolitical frictions while maintaining peace, security, and long-term stability. How can regional actors—such as China in East and Southeast Asia—balance national security with broader regional trust and cohesion? What role should the U.S. and emerging powers play, and how must they cooperate to shape a framework that is both sustainable and just? With rising tensions and short-term tactics threatening peace, this session explores what responsible security looks like in practice—and how the next phase of engagement can prioritise stability over escalation. The Thucydides Trap is well known; let us not fall into it.
As global power dynamics shift, the Global South is building resilient, homegrown partnerships that redefine traditional aid models. Civil society groups play a vital role—working together to strengthen education, gender equality, and peace efforts for women and girls. This session explores how South–South collaboration helps civil society navigate instability, climate threats, and inequality. What makes these partnerships work—and how can they be scaled to meet today’s challenges? A call to rethink solidarity in a changing world.
In recent years, two contrasting visions for the future of business have emerged. One calls for redefining the role of business in society, beyond profit, to include broader responsibilities to stakeholders, communities, and long-term value creation. This perspective emphasizes purpose-driven leadership, inclusive practices, and the importance of corporate accountability. On the other side, a growing number of voices advocate for a renewed focus on growth, efficiency, and competitiveness, particularly amid global economic uncertainty, rising inflation, and shifting geopolitical dynamics. As public expectations evolve and business models are tested, this panel will examine whether the future of business lies in balancing traditional economic goals with a broader societal mandate.
As pressures on the multilateral trading system grow, some nations are shifting toward bilateral agreements and more transactional forms of engagement. From Brexit to the re-election of Donald Trump, political developments have amplified calls to renegotiate deals, impose tariffs, and prioritise national advantage. Is this the decline of multilateralism—or a necessary evolution? This session examines how these trends are unfolding against the backdrop of an increasingly multipolar world, how businesses are adjusting their strategies, and how trade frameworks are adapting to a more fragmented global landscape.
As the world navigates deep geopolitical shifts and global uncertainty, the need for inclusive, forward-looking leadership has never been greater. Intergenerational collaboration is key—yet young people often remain on the margins of real decision-making. Join us in asking: how can youth meaningfully shape decisions alongside experienced leaders? What systemic changes are needed for shared leadership to thrive? A powerful conversation on rethinking governance through the lens of age, equity, and long-term impact.
With several months to assess the new administration, it is time to take a step back and analyse the factors that led to Trump’s re-election and what they reveal about the priorities and frustrations of the American electorate. How do Americans view his administration’s early actions, particularly in business and foreign policy? What impact is his departure from the status quo having on U.S. alliances? This session examines domestic sentiment, the evolving dynamics of transatlantic cooperation, and the challenges and opportunities ahead for US–EU relations in an era of shifting global power.

What do these changes mean for young people navigating an increasingly complex global landscape? Beyond the headlines, this session will examine key issues influencing China’s economy and provide deeper insights into the structural shifts, market sentiment, and global factors shaping its trajectory.
On the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, this session reflects on the global progress in gender equality and women’s empowerment. While significant strides have been made, challenges persist, and a growing backlash against women in leadership raises critical questions. Why is this backlash emerging, and how can it be addressed? This session will examine strategies to advance female leadership and secure progress for future generations, emphasizing the need for collective action to keep the promise of gender equality alive.
India’s economy is undergoing a generational transformation. It is striving to become a global leader in the application of new technologies, while also aiming to build on its strengths in technology services to expand into high-tech manufacturing. The country is also unlocking the economic potential of regions such as the Northeast by further integrating them into both the national and global economies. However, to realise its ambition of becoming a prosperous and influential nation by 2047, India must find ways to significantly accelerate infrastructure development, high-tech industrialisation, talent enhancement, trade expansion, and climate adaptation.
Globalisation has shaped the modern world for decades, driving economic growth, technological progress, and cultural exchange. In an engaging and interactive discussion, speakers and participants will assess the future of globalisation and its impact on businesses, governments, and individuals. In a new, innovative format at the St. Gallen Symposium, audience members will have the unique opportunity to not only engage but also take a seat on the panel, actively shaping the conversation with their perspectives and decisions.

Some of the world’s most innovative, resilient, and prosperous nations are also among the smallest. What gives them their edge in an increasingly complex and competitive global landscape? This session explores the strategic advantages that small states often possess from economic agility and strong, responsive governance to close-knit societies that foster trust, cohesion, and a forward-thinking culture of innovation. With fewer layers of bureaucracy, many small nations are quick to adapt, experiment with bold ideas, and implement change at scale. The discussion will examine how small states leverage their unique position to navigate global challenges, shape international policy, and punch above their weight on the world stage.
The global race for critical minerals is intensifying as demand for cobalt, lithium, and rare earth elements accelerates—driven by the energy transition, electrification, and rapid technological advancement. As countries and corporations compete for access, the question becomes: how can the critical minerals sector scale to meet global needs while promoting long-term economic stability, environmental responsibility, and supply chain resilience? This session explores the evolving landscape of critical minerals, examining how businesses, governments, and international actors can foster a transparent and sustainable industry. From ethical sourcing and circularity to strategic partnerships and innovation, we will discuss what it takes to ensure that this vital sector supports both the green transition and broader development goals.
Few conflicts evoke as much division as the Israel-Palestine conflict. The discourse is shaped by mutually exclusive narratives and existential fears. As war reshapes lives on both sides, global attention is drawn once again to questions of justice, security, and human dignity. In such a charged and complex environment, what approaches could help disrupt the entrenched cycle of violence? Could political solutions, humanitarian efforts or shifts within society offer a way forward? And ultimately, what future lies ahead for Israelis and Palestinians in a region longing for lasting peace?
Geopolitical shifts, resource constraints, and the push for sustainability are forcing industries to rethink their global value chains as well as supply chains. Added to this is the growing tariff uncertainty stemming from U.S. trade policy, which creates further volatility for international businesses. This session takes a closer look at these dynamics through the lens of major global industrial players whose operations rely heavily on complex, cross-border value chains. How are geopolitical risks disrupting these structures? Can circularity, recycling, and cross-industry collaboration reduce dependencies on volatile markets? Does navigating today’s world as a multinational corporation require, in some regards, deglobalization?
In this exclusive session for the Aspiring Leaders of the St. Gallen Symposium, Dominic Barton—Chairman of Rio Tinto, former Canadian Ambassador to China, and former Global Managing Partner at McKinsey—reflects on what it takes to lead in a world shaped by evolving power dynamics and complex global challenges. What qualities will define successful leadership in an increasingly multipolar world? How can the next generation lead with purpose, clarity, and adaptability amid growing uncertainty? With decades of leadership across business, diplomacy, and public service, Barton shares lessons to help emerging leaders navigate a world in flux.
Critical minerals (CM) are foundational to nearly every sector driving economic growth, technological breakthroughs, and national security in the 21st century, underpinning trillions in global economic output. However, their uneven global distribution across deposits, processing, and manufacturing makes them highly vulnerable to supply chain disruptions and geopolitical maneuvering, often fueled by actors seeking to tilt the rules in their favour. Some governments, recognizing the strategic value of their mineral reserves, are tightening export controls and foreign investment to maximize leverage. Others, reliant on imports, are pursuing multilateral initiatives, strategic stockpiles, and trade protections to avoid dependency. The geopolitics of critical minerals offers a glimpse into the future of globalization and is central to the green transition and the planet we pass on to future generations. This invitation-only workshop, co-hosted with Eurasia Group, the geopolitical risk advisory founded by Dr. Ian Bremmer, will consider the geopolitics of critical minerals with a select group of VIP stakeholders at the 54th St. Gallen Symposium. Led by EG’s in-house experts, this workshop will begin with EG’s latest macro geopolitical scenario analysis, before zeroing on how key actors can strengthen their critical minerals’ security and resilience amidst a volatile global environment.
While some companies refresh their boards by appointing young directors, many remain uncertain about the benefits, risks, and overall impact of such decisions. Limited experience, high responsibilities, complex governance, and entrenched power dynamics can make it challenging for young directors to contribute effectively. While fresh perspectives add value, turning them into influence requires competence, specific skills, and credibility. As young leaders navigate these challenges, how can they make a meaningful impact and contribute to critical board decisions? What skillsets are essential? And how can boards better integrate younger voices while creating an environment that fosters their engagement?
Learning is power, but what is the role of learning today, when answers are just a prompt away? And how must leadership evolve in response? Geopolitical tensions, the war in Ukraine, and defense investment gaps are testing Europe's security. In what EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen calls the "Era of Rearmament," the EU is ramping up defense spending to strengthen capabilities amid shifting global power dynamics and uncertain transatlantic ties. As Europe rethinks its defense posture, key questions emerge: How can it balance deeper cooperation with strategic self-reliance? What roles will EU unity, national interests, and NATO play in a changing world order? And how can neutral states like Switzerland define their place in an increasingly polarized security landscape?
The global energy landscape has been profoundly disrupted by recent geopolitical events and the growing imperative for sustainability, triggering a shift from abundant, cheap energy to one characterised by rising costs and supply uncertainty. This session explores the energy trilemma—balancing affordability, sustainability, and security—and its implications for the future energy mix. Can renewables scale quickly enough? Will nuclear bridge critical gaps? And what role, if any, should fossil fuels continue to play? Beyond technical solutions, this discussion will examine the ways in which energy choices influence global stability, equity, and resilience.
Political uncertainty, shifting regulations, and economic volatility are forcing businesses to rethink their strategies in real time. From trade policies to geopolitical tensions, companies must navigate an increasingly complex landscape while staying competitive and resilient. This session brings together top executives to explore how political uncertainty is shaping corporate decision-making, investment flows, and risk management. Expect insights on how businesses can stay agile, mitigate risks, and turn unpredictability into opportunity.

But in a time of growing demand for innovation and the green transition, can such fiscal rigidity keep pace, or is greater flexibility the key to navigating the challenges ahead?

In a world shaped by disruption and transformation, the question is no longer if we trust, but how we build and sustain trust across cultures, generations, and systems. This session explores the role of confidence and cultural security as stabilising forces in uncertain times — and how organisations can harness the strength of their cultural DNA to remain future-oriented and resilient. We’ll dive into the essential ingredients of trust in a rapidly shifting world: credibility, integrity, proximity — and the role of shared purpose. At the heart of this exploration lies a critical shift: moving from knowing to doing by embracing vulnerability as a leadership strategy. Through interactive exercises, dialogue, and reflection, participants will uncover how trust is not just a mindset, but a practice — one that turns high ideals into real, human connection and performance. Whether you lead teams, shape organisations, or simply seek to navigate complexity with greater authenticity, this session offers inspiration and practical tools to embrace vulnerability as a catalyst for trust, connection, and meaningful leadership in action.

Amid transformative global power shifts, businesses face unprecedented uncertainty. How can different generations of leaders jointly chart the course forward? The “Voices of the Leaders of Tomorrow 2025” (VOLOT 2025) report – a collaboration between the Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM) and the St. Gallen Symposium – surveyed over 800 emerging leaders (Leaders of Tomorrow) and 275 senior executives on leadership priorities in a volatile, multipolar world. In today’s messy, unpredictable world, regenerative change doesn’t come from eliminating complexity but from working with it. This workshop invites participants to explore the tensions that arise in efforts to create systemic change — and to treat those tensions not as problems to solve, but as creative catalysts. We will explore paradoxes at the heart of regeneration: urgency vs. deep time, emergence vs. structure, scalability vs. place-based integrity, and more. Through reflection, mapping, and rapid design exercises, participants will gain practical experience in holding tensions and using them to generate resilient, adaptive ideas for regenerative futures.

In an era of information warfare, disinformation campaigns, and concentrated media ownership, the question of who truly shapes the public sphere has never been more pressing. Do states set the terms of public discourse, or have billionaires—through social media platforms and private media empires—become the ultimate gatekeepers? What role does civil society play in safeguarding independent information and ensuring democratic access to knowledge? This session will explore the mechanisms that influence public discourse, from fact-checking initiatives and public media institutions to the role of oversight boards. How can policy frameworks and activism counteract misinformation and ensure that information remains a public good rather than a tool of power consolidation?

As political landscapes shift and economic pressures mount, the sustainability transition is facing intense scrutiny. Across several countries, including the U.S., governments are rolling back climate initiatives, and in an America potentially shaped by a second Trump presidency, ESG principles are under political attack. Inflation, slow growth, and concerns over short-term competitiveness have led many business leaders to deprioritize sustainability efforts. Is this trend a temporary reaction to economic hardship, or does it signal a fundamental shift away from corporate climate commitments? What role should businesses play in driving the green transition when political will wavers? This session will explore how companies can navigate regulatory uncertainty, maintain momentum on sustainability goals, and reinforce the long-term business case for climate action.
