Prof. Mariana Valente

Speaker at the St. Gallen Symposium

Prof. Mariana Valente is an assistant professor of law and researcher at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, and co-founder and associate director of InternetLab in Brazil. She researches digital platform regulation and artificial intelligence from a socio-legal perspective, focusing on gender violence, intellectual property in the digital economy, regulation in peripheral markets, and data justice. She is the author of Online Misogyny in Brazil (2026), which, in its Portuguese version (2023) was a finalist for the Jabuti Academic Award, Brazil's most important book award. She was a member of the Brazilian Federal Senate's Commission of Jurists that drafted the AI regulation bill, and of the working group of the Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic (SECOM/PR) to assess the impact of deepfakes. She has also coordinated Creative Commons in Brazil and written extensively on copyright policy and the commons. In 2025, she received the Internet Governance Highlights Award from CGI.br (Internet Steering Committee in Brazil).
